Patent documents describe how the PS5 console
will be able to run old games, namely by emulation techniques. Also read:

documents about emulation of old console games on new consoles. (Sony
Entertainment) The PS5 is predicted to use a processor (CPU) and GPU with the
latest architecture that is faster from the oldest.
However, this architecture is not necessarily
the same as the previous generation of consoles. The PS3, for example, has a
Cell Processor with a unique architecture that is difficult to emulate so Sony
has trouble making PS3 game emulators on the PS4 The existence of this latest
patent indicates that Sony might have found a way to emulate PS3 games on the
PS5, along with PS4, PS2 and PS1.
However, the patent does not mean the old game
emulation technology will really be present in the next generation Sony game
consoles. Even if applied, it might not be on the PS4, but another variant of
the PS4. For now, PS2 emulators are already available to PS4 owners through the
PlayStation Store. Then, some PS2 and PS3 games are offered to the PS4 through
the PlayStation Now streaming service.
